Empowering Lochoremoit’s Food Vendors: IFIP and Turkana County Health Department Promote Hygiene and Growth

In a strong show of community engagement and support for small businesses, the Islamic Foundation for Integrated Programs (IFIP), in partnership with the Turkana County Government’s Health Department, held an impactful forum in Lochoremoit aimed at uplifting local food vendors—particularly those in the nyama choma (roast meat) business.

The event focused on two core goals: improving hygiene standards and empowering business owners with knowledge and tools to grow their enterprises.

Through interactive sessions, business owners were sensitised on the importance of hygiene, food safety, and cleanliness in ensuring public health and attracting more customers. They were also trained on basic business skills, including how to reinvest profits, manage daily operations, and expand their businesses sustainably.

As part of the support package, IFIP and the health department donated 4 dustbins to improve waste management in the area. To further boost the operations of the nyama choma businesses, all owners received new grills, sharp knives, clean chopping boards, aluminium foil, soap, and other essential items to help them maintain hygienic and professional setups.

This initiative is part of IFIP’s broader commitment to economic empowerment and public health, especially in underserved areas. By equipping local vendors with knowledge and resources, IFIP is helping to create safer food environments while strengthening small business livelihoods.
