A Second Chance: How IFIP Rescued 17-Year-Old Vinicious Ekai and Helped Him Return to School

In 2024, Vinicious Ekai, a determined 17-year-old from Kakuma, sat for his Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KEPSEA) with the hope of continuing his education. However, his dreams were put on hold when his mother, Asekon Nakali, was unable to support his schooling. With no other option, he was asked to herd goats instead.

Refusing to give up on his future, Vincious made the difficult decision to leave Kakuma for Lodwar, hoping to find a way to continue his education. Unfortunately, with no support or resources, he ended up living on the streets, struggling to survive.

Recognizing his plight, the Islamic Foundation for Integrated Programs (IFIP), in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Protection’s Department of Children Services, intervened and rescued Vincious from the streets. He was placed at the County Rescue Centre for rehabilitation, where he received care, support, and guidance to help him get back on track.

Thanks to the dedication of IFIP and its partners, Vincious was later enrolled at Kakuma Mixed Primary and Junior School, giving him a second chance to pursue his education and a brighter future.

Vincious comes from a separated family, with his father, Chomino Ekai, living in Lokichogio, and his mother, Asekon Nakali, residing in Kakuma. Despite his challenges, he remains determined to build a better life through education—a dream made possible by the unwavering support of IFIP and the Ministry of Social Protection.

His story is a powerful reminder of the impact of humanitarian efforts in transforming young lives and ensuring that every child, no matter their circumstances, has the opportunity to learn and thrive.
